Pest Eradication Program (PEP)

The PEP is to encourage and promote ethical and sustainable hunting in NSW for SSAA NSW Hunting & Conservation (H&C) participants and future generations:

  • Through new membership and junior development to increase the role and profile of hunters and hunting in NSW.

  • Identifying the role of hunters in our society and also in Australian history and recognising their contribution.

  • Through education programs, raise the standard of ‘Ethical Hunting’ within our participants.

  • Promote the values of ‘old Australia’ and ‘The Bush’ to our participants.

How Can We Help?

By doing what we enjoy for free.

  • Our participants enjoy hunting and will respect the rights and privacy of the landowners.

  • All H&C participants will follow reasonable instructions from landowners while conducting Pest Eradication Programs.

How Does The Program Work?

To be eligible to participate in the PEP you must be:

  1. A Member of the SSAA NSW and a financial participant of the H&C Program: and

  2. Hold H&C Accreditation.

To Become a financial participant of H&C, contact SSAA NSW Office to request an information pack which contains an application form.

  • Complete and return the application form together with your payment of $55.00 (the annual H&C participant fee).

  • Upon confirmation of your acceptance, you will be sent information on the H&C Accreditation Course together with your H&C Participants Card.

  • Once you have completed the Accreditation Course, forward the answer booklet to the SSAA NSW Office for assessment.

  • Upon successful accreditation, you will be forwarded information on the PEP, including an invitation to register the areas in which you wish to hunt.

RURAL Landowners

For the SSAA NSW Hunting & Conservation Program to be of assistance, we first have to identify the pest problem and the best way of dealing with it.

First and foremost, we only engage in legal activities.  We are aware and adhere to the following Acts and Regulations while conducting our hunting:

Commons Management 20001, Crimes Act 1900, Crown Lands Act 2980, Firearms Act 1996 No 46, Firearms (General) Regulations 1977, Forestry Act 1916 No 55, Forestry Regulation 19999, Game and Feral Act 2002, National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 No 80, National Parks and Wildlife Regulation 2002, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (General) Regulation 1996, Weapons Prohibition Act 19998 N 127 14, Companion Animals Act 1998.

To comply with these laws and commence a PEP activity, we need the assistance of the landholder with the following:

  • A written consent form stating formal permission for participants of the H&C to hunt on the specified property.

  • A map of the rural holding showing boundaries, preferably a guided tour of the boundaries before activities commence.  Information on the whereabouts of buildings and stock is also required.

  • Information on these pests as we are required to use adequate calibres for larger game.  Rabbits and foxes can be taken with rimfires and up, goats and pigs 6mm and up.  Kangaroos have to be taken in accordance with National Parks guidelines using .223 and up.

  • Information on pest movements and sightings to enable efficient hunting.

  • A suitable site where our participants can camp during overnight trips. Our participants are required to ensure all refuse is removed from the property and the camp site made good.

  • In the case of a nocturnal pest spotlighting techniques may be required.  In this case, we will co-ordinate with the landowner and only engage in spotlighting with a set of guidelines and directions from the landowner.

H&C Participants

  • All participants of the Pest Eradication Programs on private property will be accredited for such activities.

  • All participants are fully insured under the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia insurance policy.

  • Participants  will make certain all gates are left as found, no stock on private property is targeted and all litter and refuse is removed from the property.

Booking a Consultation

We understand that all problems are different.  The land changes from one district to another.  For this reason, we recommend a personal visit from representatives of the H&C Committee to assess your needs.
